What does it mean to be part of a desperate crowd of seven million commuters, whose journey between home and workplace is a nightmare? In Mumbai (Bombay), a city of 15 million people, life goes on as if nothing was out of place, despite overcrowded trains, endless traffic jams, and permanent danger on the roads. The routine journeys take a high toll: nearly 4000 people are killed every year, falling off of trains or getting run over on the tracks. Moving between the dramatic and the reflective, Journeys juxtaposes this tragic situation with mainstream discourse on progress and military power. Richly detailed, poetic, and virtually non-verbal, the film subtly and pointedly explores universal issues of space and human relations within a very specific environment. This mute parable goes on to expose the priorities of a government which cares more about armaments than about development.
