Workshop structure

The workshop involves group sessions and one-on-one consultations. Verzió DocLab provides a safe environment for all filmmakers to receive constructive feedback from fellow filmmakers and our mentors.

Through the first 4 days of Verzió DocLab, the teams of directors and editors work together with the mentors on selected scenes of their film. The process helps them defining their own cinematic vision and defining a narrative structure, while brings important themes and ideas to the surface. Verzió DocLab aims to provide creative and inspirational munnition for the in-development projects.

Our mentors also provide a master class also open to the international and Hungarian documentary community, focusing on case studies in documentary editing and directing. The ideas of our masterclasses are put into practice during our workshop, providing further education and support for the selected projects.

On the last day of the workshop, the filmmakers present their projects and their selected scenes to international sales agents, festival selectors and producers as part of an exclusive presentation. As a result you will not only have professional guidance for your upcoming post-production period, but also an experience in pitching which can be later used for fundraising and further development of the project. During the presentation day Verzió will offer various forms of awards through our partnerships in Hungary and abroad.

Thanks to the support of Central University of Budapest, each team is provided with an editing room with extra technical equipment and technical support.

The teams only need to bring their own editing computers and laptops.

The participation is free of charge and comes with a full festival accreditation.

Select countries can receive reimbursement for travel and accommodation.

Each year a 2-3 select project receive our shortlisted support. These projects could not be part of our main selection, but as our mission to help upcoming filmmakers and their vision we offer an opportunity to meet our mentors for a 1 hour consultation in person or online during the workshop days.

For directors editing their own films, we offer the help of the Hungarian film community.

If your project is selected and you are a director editing your own work or if your editor is not available for the workshop days, we offer to pair you up with an editor or a dramaturgist from the Hungarian filmmaker community, thanks to our friends at MADOKE (Hungarian Documentary Association) and HSE (Hungarian Society of Film and Video Editors). This is not only a great possibility to find new international connections, but also helps your process of realising your vision and shaping your film during and after Verzió DocLab.

As part of the dedication of Verzió towards supporting documentary filmmakers, we also have an Observer programme. International and Hungarian filmmakers from various backgrounds have the opportunity to learn by taking part in the workshop and offering their insight and feedback to the projects from their unique and special perspective.
