David Abelevich Kaufman (Denis Kaufman; pseudonym Dziga Vertov) was a director, screenwriter, and theoretician of documentary film, one of the creators of its language. He came to Soviet documentary film in 1918, inspired by the ideas of the revolution, and became known as a vivid innovator and experimenter. Vertov’s films One Sixth of the World (1926), Enthusiasm: Symphony of the Donbass (1930), Three Songs about Lenin (1934), and especially Man with a Movie Camera (1929) remain models for generations of documentary filmmakers. His filming practices and theories influenced the cinéma vérité style of documentary moviemaking and the Dziga Vertov Group, a radical filmmaking cooperative which was active in the 1960s.

Mari Gulbiani is a Georgian film director and screenplay writer. She studied philology at Tbilisi State University, and film directing at the Theatre and Film State University. From 2006 until 2010, she fine-tuned her experience at the Parisian film school, ‘Ateliers Varan’. In 2007, she founded the production company, Midifilm. She has worked in the program department of the CineDoc Tbilisi documentary film festival, and for CineDoc Young as a section coordinator.

Daniel Lambo is a filmmaker from Belgium. He started his career as a writer for theater, television and cinema. As a director, Lambo shifted his attention towards social themes. His renewed approach to filmmaking—both intuitive and socially engaged—inspired him to start his own production company, Lambo Films.

Bénédicte Liénard studied film direction. After her studies, she worked as assistant director on the films of, among others, the Dardenne brothers and Raymond Depardon. Her first feature film « Une Part du Ciel » was screened at Cannes, Toronto, San Sebastian and New York. She went on to direct numerous hard-hitting documentaries, widely screened both in festivals and on television. Titles include « D’arbres et de Charbon » and « Sobre las Brasas », directed with Mary Jimenez.
