Love Is Not an Orange / Film+Discussion
Due to the economic crisis in the early 1990’s, women left Moldova in large numbers to provide for their families. Unable to return home, they found a peculiar way to stay in touch: sending large cardboard boxes filled with gifts and food that could only be dreamt of in those days. In return, their children would send videotapes. Through these intimate private archives, Otilia Babara depicts the fragility of family bonds strained by distance that a generation of mothers and daughters were forced to endure to survive.
How do these generations of women cope? What is the situation now in terms of care migration in Eastern Europe? What can be done about the gender employment gap?
Participants:
Otilia Babara, documentary filmmaker (Love Is Not an Orange)
Maria José Chamorro, Formalization and Gender Equality Specialist, ILO Central and Eastern Europe
Noémi Katona, sociologist
Moderator: Flóra Csatári, journalist at HVG
The discussion will be held in English.
