By the Name of Tania
The Amazon flows lazily through the goldmine-gashed landscape of northern Peru. Using eyewitness accounts, the film tells the story of a young woman who is forced into prostitution when her initial attempts to escape the stifling limitations of village life go wrong. Step by step, she is robbed of her moral and physical integrity. The film reconstitutes a space of dignity, and brings a voice and identity to that which had been rendered nameless. With its powerful imagery, the girl’s traumatic odyssey embodies the horrific devastation visited upon the natural world by contemporary industrial society.
Bénédicte Liénard studied film direction. After her studies, she worked as assistant director on the films of, among others, the Dardenne brothers and Raymond Depardon. Her first feature film « Une Part du Ciel » was screened at Cannes, Toronto, San Sebastian and New York. She went on to direct numerous hard-hitting documentaries, widely screened both in festivals and on television. Titles include « D’arbres et de Charbon » and « Sobre las Brasas », directed with Mary Jimenez.
Born in Peru, Mary Jimenez pursued film studies in Belgium. She has also taught filmmaking in Belgium, Cuba and Switzerland. Being a writer and a director for more than 30 years, Mary’s work includes films like « Du Verbe Aimer », « La Position du Lion Couché », « Le Dictionnaire selon Marcus » et « Héros sans Visage », all of wich have been selected at numerous festivals woldwide. « By the name of Tania » will be her third collaboration with Bénédicte Liénard.
