The Siege
Over the course of seven years, we watch the citizens of the small medieval town of Kremnica battle the local and international mining companies that are trying to extract gold and minerals from the nearby mountains, which also contain many rare, natural habitats. As a result, the beautiful Kremnickévrchy mountain range is slowly turning into a moonscape. The film reveals how Slovakia lacks an institution that can protect nature or force these companies to reclaim the environment they destroyed.
Zuzana Piussi is a Slovak director, documentary filmmaker, producer and actress. She graduated from the Department of Directing, at the Film and Television Faculty of the Academy of Performing Arts in Bratislava. From 1992 until 2000, she worked with the Stoka Theater, and was subsequently involved in the theater project, SKRAT.
