Sonita
Sonita is an 18-year-old undocumented Afghan immigrant living in the poor suburbs of Tehran. She is a feisty young woman who fights to live the way she wants – as an artist, singer, and musician in Iran, where women aren’t allowed to sing. Her conservative patriarchal family, especially her mother, have other plans for Sonita: to sell her as a bride, bringing the family around US$ 9,000. How can Sonita still make her dreams come true? When director Rokhsareh Ghaem Maghami becomes personally involved in answering this question, it raises the issue of how documentary filmmakers should interact with their subjects. This is just one of the many unexpected twists along the exciting journey of setbacks and successes for a young woman treading her own path.
